A pilot in English
Which papers do you actually need?
Vyřídíš to is a guide to Czech bureaucracy: answer a few questions about your situation and get the steps, the documents, the forms, the authority, the fee and the law behind them.
This English version is a small pilot: only 5 situations are translated so far, out of everything the Czech site covers. The Czech version is the authoritative one, kept up to date and checked against the law. If you can read Czech, use that one.
Translated situations
- ID and documentsA foreigner registers their residence / I'm hosting a foreignerA foreigner must report their place of residence to the police, not the municipal office, and the deadline depends on citizenship. Anyone hosting a foreigner has their own separate reporting duty.
- ID and documentsAcquiring Czech citizenship by grantPermanent residence, Czech language and civics exams, a clean record — and even after meeting every condition, there is still no legal entitlement to citizenship. The Ministry of the Interior decides, but you file the application at the regional office.
- BusinessRegistering a free trade licenceA free trade licence needs no education or experience — you just need to have full legal capacity and a clean record. One notification also registers you with social security, your health insurer and the tax office.
- ID and documentsChanging your health insurerYou can choose your health insurer only once every 12 months, and only as of 1 January or 1 July — not each quarter, as is often assumed. The application must arrive 3 months in advance.
- ID and documentsChanging permanent residenceRegistering costs CZK 50 and can be done on the spot. But watch the quiet follow-up: registering starts a 45-day clock, after which your ID card automatically stops being valid.
- Cars and driving licencesReplacing or issuing a driving licenceThe mandatory replacement after your licence expires is free and takes 20 days. Rushing it costs 700 CZK, and the regular medical checks start later than commonly claimed.
- Cars and driving licencesRegistering an imported vehicleHave a vehicle with a European certificate of conformity? You go straight to registration for 800 CZK. Without it you first need the technical fitness approved, and for a vehicle from outside the EU that means a full technical protocol from a testing station.
- Cars and driving licencesTransferring a vehicle to a new ownerYou have 10 working days to register the transfer, and a sale needs a joint request from both sides. Skip it and you risk a fine of up to fifty thousand.
- Money and benefitsIncome tax returnAn employee with a signed declaration and no side income above 20,000 CZK doesn't have to file anything themselves, just ask the employer for an annual settlement by 15 February. Anyone who does have to file has a deadline depending on how they file: paper by the end of March, electronically by the end of April, through an advisor by 1 July.
- ID and documentsSetting up a data boxA data box is free and is set up without delay after you apply. Before you ask for one, note one thing: whatever arrives in it counts as delivered after ten days, even if you never log in.
- Money and benefitsRegistering with the Labour Office and unemployment benefitRegister within 3 working days of your job ending so your benefit starts right away. How much you get and for how long depends on your age, not on who gave notice.
- Building and housingTerminating a flat leaseWhether you're giving notice or your landlord is, it's governed by the Civil Code, not by an agreement on what's "fair". What matters is who is giving notice, why, and whether the lease is for a fixed or indefinite term.
